The NYS Human Rights Commission has re-opened an investigation to look into whether the City of Plattsburgh was motivated by discrimination when it chose employees for layoff.
Sources say the NYS Human Rights Commission has found probable cause the City of Plattsburgh may have discriminated against older workers. According to documents the NYS Human Rights Commission is launching a new investigation to look into whether older workers who were laid-off by the City of Plattsburgh were targeted because of their age. The documents suggest that the city was attempting to rid its workforce of older workers. The commission noted that of 5 employees selected for layoff last February 3 were over the age of 40 and close to retirement age.
This ruling of probable cause comes on the heals of an arbitrators decsion that the City of Plattsburgh wrongfully demoted two of its firefighters as part of the reduction in force that took place last February. This decision awarded the firefighters reinstatement with full back pay and benefits.
